A Fall in Autumn Customer Reviews
:- 5.0 out of 5 stars from 'chelle -- Science Fiction Noir sans Clichés : What happens if you take a hardboiled detective story, locate it 10,000 years in the future, remove the toxic masculinity, and add wry humor with a hint of transhumanism? A Fall in Autumn is what you get. ( Reviewed in the United States on February 10, 2019 )
- from Michael Holland -- VINE VOICE : Fascinating look into the future ( 4.0 out of 5 stars )
- 4.0 out of 5 stars from knobren -- Good sci-fi : A Fall in Autumn was a bit confusing at first, but that's often how sci-fi stories begin. The author slowly and naturally described and expounded on this futuristic, dystopian, gritty, urban society, its history, technology, economic system, class system, and major religions. The world building was fantastic! Overall, the world, the characters, and the main mystery were really intriguing. There are other things I'd like to learn about this world. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Rachel A. Brune -- An intense, enveloping read. : It’s hard to enumerate all the things I loved about this book without heading into spoiler territory ... suffice it to say, the characters were very human — problematic, troubled, trying to do the right thing but not always getting it right (even the characters who aren’t quite human.) the setting is richly drawn and imaginative; I was sucked right into the book from the first page. There are a few books I read every year that leave a lasting impression, and as I crack this open to read it for a second time, I have to say, this is one. Definitely recommend! - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Jessica Glanville -- Baroque Dystopia With a Tasty Side of Empathy : This is a science fiction noir with a solid understanding of both genres. It builds a fantastical world that both eviscerates and illuminates our own around a hero with a glowing core of thwarted romanticism at the center of his broken heart. Valerius is an "Artisanal human" working a case for a golem, a consciousness that might have once been human in the shell of a mechanical Superman. Following a twisted trail through Autumn, the last floating city, the detective shatters the crust of his world. I can't wait to read the next one to explore what he's found. Frank and frightening and full of bitter hope, this series is not to be missed. ( Reviewed in the United States on July 5, 2019 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Olivia Wylie -- I think I'm in love... : I am in love with this book. It's lyrical, poetic and gritty as a city street. It's complicated, it's messy, and it's alive. It's a love letter to urban living and human hope, an indictment of urban living and human weakness. Beyond that, it's just a great story! ( Reviewed in the United States on March 19, 2019 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Sandra Jett Ball -- The future You Didn't Expect : The protagonist, a down and out gumshoe, is set on a journey to solve an impossible quest. We love him, we despise him, we root for him, we wish him the worst. Yet through all of our conflictions we pull for him to succeed even as we would willingly dig his grave. This is the writing talent of Michael G Williams at his finest. He knows his characters and cleverly delivers them to us bit by bit slowly drawing us in until we're deeply committed and fully a member of the plot. A great start to what will be an entertaining series surely full of unexpected twists before we reach the last page. ( Reviewed in the United States on November 11, 2019 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Jim -- One of the best books I've read in years : With hints of dark city, and a well developed world, it took me a couple of chaos in to get into the flow and language, and then I was hooked. It deserves a hugo. ( Reviewed in the United States on February 26, 2019 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from chris y -- A great read for SF fans or Nick Charles wannabes. Or both. : I enjoyed this a lot. When I started it I didn't think I was going to, because of a number of standard genre tropes that cropped up in the first pages, but then I realised that they were there in order to be inverted and generally screwed around with. Which they were very skilfully. Also awesome plotting and characters. Now waiting for the next one with bated breath. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 11, 2019 )
