• 4.0 out of 5 stars from Joelle M -- A poignant coming-of-age story : This book is short but I found it hard to get into because the writing was sporadic and, in my opinion, a bit all over the place. It's made to feel as though the author is speaking directly to you, but as he jumps from topic to topic, I felt very disconnected. It does smooth out and I was able to settle into Billy's story. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from RaabH -- A relatively unsung classic : On the surface this seems to be a simple story, but once you get into the book you realize this is a case where it is the journey itself that matters most. The main character, Billy, narrates the book in his own voice. At first the conversational style might throw you off a bit -- there are some run-on sentences and odd punctuation, and Billy often addresses you, the reader, directly. Once you settle in for a few pages, though, Billy's words are easier to follow and the occasional odd rhythms only add to his charm. There is plenty of humor and drama, and some the best-written dialog I've encountered. There are some sexy scenes, too, and Billy's enthusiasm for these (well, at least in the ones with the boys!) comes across quite vividly as well. ( Reviewed in the United States on July 20, 2004 )

A good glimpse of what life was like for a gay teenager in the 60's. : This was a pretty sweet story about a teenage boy coming to terms with his homosexuality and his first relationship. Written in the 80's and taking place in the 60's, it reminds us of how much things have changed since then and how much further we still need to go for equality. The lead character wants to marry his boyfriend, but knows he can't because men couldn't marry back then. In some places they still can't. But I digress. The story has a lot of humor, a lot of love, and a lot of heartache. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because the narrator lies about things (which he admits to doing) and jumps around. The first half of the novel is very confusing because of this. But once Billy (the narrator) decides to stop lying and tell things in order the book becomes very interesting. I only wish the author (who died of AIDS in the early 90's) got to live long enough to see how the country has changed. ( Reviewed in the United States on November 11, 2014 )
• 5.0 out of 5 stars from Lauren -- Touching, memorable read : This book was pretty pivotal. It was the first piece of LGBT literature I had read and it was done exceptionally. The description of the relationship from friends to more than friends was so accurate and touching, regardless of what gender you are. It was a great coming of age story that is very relatable. The writing style is easy to read and you'll be surprised to find yourself completely immersed in it until you finish. Great read! ( Reviewed in the United States on August 17, 2017 )

I read it when I was still in high school; I already knew I was gay, and I remember this story just knocking me over completely. I reread it again last year at 38, and it was every bit as wonderful: totally real, alive, historic but timeless. Billy might be the greatest teen gay protagonist in literature. He's sarcastic, profane, vulnerable, uncertain but open to new realizations, and above all a real person. I've read quite a few gay coming of age novels, but none of them come close to this one in terms of a singular work of art where every aspect of the novel - characters, setting, tone, dialogue, narrative - creates a perfect whole. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Greg Dunn -- Well worth searching out - deserving of a wider audience : Having recently read the avowed gay classic 'Dancer from the Dance' and not been especially taken with it, I approached the far less celebrated 'The Boys on the Rock' by John Fox with expectations shelved. The fact it's not as widely known or heralded is presumably down to its only having had one reprint since its publication in 1984 - that being a paperback version a decade later - because it's brilliant.
